DNS Recommendations for Email

Please adhere to common email configuration best practices for your M365 email domain to ensure your emails are delivered successfully to the recipient and to avoid being flagged as spam by receiving mail systems.

MX Record

Make sure that you have a valid MX record set up for your email domain as described in the System Requirements.

SPF Record

Include the IP address of your outbound mail server in the SPF record of your email domain.

PTR / rDNS Record

Set up a PTR / rDNS record for the IP address of your outbound mail server which resolves to a public FQDN. This should ideally match the HELO hostname of your email server.

A Record

Make sure the destination hostname of your PTR Record resolves back to the corresponding IP address.

DMARC Record

It is recommended to provide a DMARC Record for your email domain according to your SPF and DKIM (Fixing issues with Microsoft 365 DKIM) configuration.
